Research Opportunities

Students at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) have the opportunity to learn from and work alongside acclaimed researchers—challenging them to chart their own course. Students are able to work with research faculty from all over the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai’s research departments and divisions, laboratories, institutes, and centers. 

Medical Student Research Office (MSRO)

The Patient-Oriented Research Training and Leadership (PORTAL) program is a highly mentored dual-degree program (MD/MSCR), leading to a career in translational research. Learn more.

Scholarly Year

During a Scholarly Year, ISMMS students can devote themselves fully to research projects, while taking a year off from their medical training.  Learn more.

SCHOLaR Program

The Scholarship and Research (SCHOLaR) program provides fundamental research skills alongside with a mentored research experience in Years 1 and 2.  Using milestones and advisors, students are prepared for summer research and a subsequent presentation at the annual Medical Student Research Day. Distinction in Research recognizes students who take ownership of an original research project and publish the results as a first author during medical school. Learn more.
