Development, Regeneration, and Stem Cells

In the Development, Regeneration, and Stem Cells concentration, we work with model organisms and a variety of stem cell systems to address fundamental questions about embryonic development and adult tissue homeostasis and regeneration.

Our goal is to train the next generation of scientists to become experts in developmental and stem cell biology, preparing students for careers that will push the boundaries in basic biomedical research and regenerative medicine, ultimately helping to alleviate human disease.

Regenerative medicine holds enormous promise for treatment of human disease. The foundations of regenerative medicine are developmental and stem cell biology, disciplines that encompass genetics, cell biology, and physiology. Research performed by students in the DRS concentration provides insights into biological processes that, when disrupted, result in congenital defects, physiological dysfunction, or disease. Students’ discoveries lead to fundamental insight into vital processes and offer potential therapeutic avenues for intervention by harnessing principles of developmental and stem biology.

Our curriculum offers basic and advanced coursework, seminars, work-in-progress presentations, and journal clubs. Students work with faculty drawn from multiple departments to provide a comprehensive, multifaceted training experience.

Students in the Development, Regeneration, and Stem Cells training area are from diverse backgrounds, united by a passion for science and an inquisitive mind for discovery.

Our Directors & Faculty

Meet Our Co-Directors

Florence Marlow, PhD, is Associate Professor of Cell, Developmental, and Regenerative Biology. Her laboratory uses powerful zebrafish genetics to study conserved genes and cell types in the developing reproductive system to decipher their embryonic origins and contributions to normal gonad development, Disorders of Sexual Differentiation, reproductive health, and fertility.

Robert Krauss, PhD, is Professor of Cell, Developmental, and Regenerative Biology, and Professor of Oncological Sciences. His laboratory studies the complex etiology of common birth defects and adult stem cell-mediated tissue regeneration with the mouse as a model organism.
