Research

Researchers in the in the RESPOND Center bridge gaps between basic and translational science, clinical research, and clinical care in substance use disorder research. Please explore an up-to-date collection of our discoveries in emerging Substances, Poisoning, and overdose below.

Our current research projects include:

  • Manini
    • R01 - Predicting medical consequences of novel fentanyl analog overdose using the Toxicology Investigators Consortium (TOXIC) (R01DA048009)
      • A multicenter registry study of patients who present to emergency departments to deepen our knowledge of novel psychoactive synthetic opioids, the majority of which are fentanyl analogues, in terms of the epidemiology, analytical confirmation, clinical risk factors, and treatment needs.
    • Supplement – CDC Partnership for Enhanced Enrollment (DA048009-01A1S3)
      • Supplemental funding procured through partnership with CDC to enroll an additional 500 participants in year three of R01 project.
    • Supplement – CDC partnership year 2 (NOA received 6/1/23)
      • Supplemental funding procured through partnership with CDC to enroll an additional 500 participants in year 4 of R01 project.
    • T32 – Associate Director, Clinician Scientist Training Program in Emergency Care Research (T32HL129974)
      • Establishing “The Mount Sinai Clinician-Scientist Training Program in Emergency Care Research,” to train clinician-scientists in emergency care research. The program is multidisciplinary, accepting candidates trained in any of the specialties involved in emergency care research including emergency medicine, cardiology, pulmonary, critical care, or trauma surgery.
    • CURE-19 – Mentor, Determinants of OD and opioid OD risk during the COVID-19 pandemic (Mentee: Siri Shastry)
      • Investigating the Impact of the SAR-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic on the opioid overdose (OD) risk factors and risk behaviors in the Emergency Department (ED) patients presenting with non-fatal opioid overdose at Elmhurst Hospital Center (EHC) and Mount Sinai Queens (MSQ) through patient surveys, chart review and qualitative interviews.
    • MTF/EMF – Mentor, ED Based Acute Pain Management for Opioid Use Disorder Patients (Mentee: Jennifer Love)
      • Understanding risk factors associated with opioid overdose and self-directed discharge from the ED. It also explores ED-based stigma towards Opioid Use Disorder (OUD patients) in a novel manner, through both self-reported surveys and historic electronic health record data. Results of this study will better inform strategies to combat clinician stigma and barriers to ED pain treatment for OUD patients.
    • R25 – Consultant/Faculty - The ANTIDOTE Institute to Advance New Toxicology Investigators in Drug abuse and Original Translational research Efforts (R25DA058490)
      • The ANTIDOTE Institute provides an opportunity for fellows and junior faculty to begin to develop their own area of investigation, network with peers and experienced investigators in the field, and gather practical knowledge on topics core to developing a successful research program.
  • Cowan
    • UG3 - Safety and Efficacy of High Dose Buprenorphine Induction in Fentanyl Positive Emergency Department Patients (UG3DA056891)
      • Identify a rapid, simple and safe method for buprenorphine induction in untreated emergency department patients with opioid use disorder, regardless of Fentalog use, using supratherapeutic doses of buprenorphine given as a single administration.
    • R34 - PrEP-ED: PrEP Services in the Emergency Department for Hard-to-Reach Populations (R34MH130267)
      • The study focuses on people with intersecting vulnerabilities whose HIV risk is disproportionately high and for whom the ED may be the only source of care. Implementing PrEP in the ED has the potential to prevent HIV infections by identifying, educating and initiating PrEP among individuals at an elevated risk of HIV who lack access or don’t seek primary care services.
    • T32 – Assistant Director, Clinician Scientist Training Program in Emergency Care Research (T32HL129974)
