Mount Sinai Genetics and Genomics Summer Scholars

The Mount Sinai Genomics Summer Scholars Program is an internship program open to undergraduate students from underrepresented communities in science and medicine backgrounds. Our 10-week program offers innovative, world-class programs to students interested in genetics and genomics research.

“The Department of Genetics and Genomic Sciences is committed to building a diverse and anti-racist next generation of scientists and expanding the pipeline of researchers from underrepresented communities.”

Efrat Eliyahu, PhD
Mount Sinai Genetics and Genomics Summer Scholars Director
Assistant Professor, Genetics and Genomic Sciences

Mount Sinai Genetics and Genomics Summer Scholars is a 10-week summer research opportunity for underrepresented minority (URM) undergraduate students from the New York City area to perform cutting-edge research at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, providing students with an interdisciplinary research experience in experiment-based and/or computation-based research, mentoring, and professional development opportunities. Students will work full-time on a research project, while mentored by a researcher in genetics and genomic sciences. In addition to research, participants will attend regular events, such as scientific seminars. Undergraduate students from fields including biology, computational biology, mathematics, computer science, statistics, data science, and engineering are welcome to apply.

Personal statement: should include research experience, if any, reasons you are applying for  this internship, research interests, and career interests and plans following graduation

Undergraduate students in the New York City area majoring in fields including biology, computational biology, mathematics, computer science, statistics, and data science are welcome to apply. Students must identify as an underrepresented minority in STEM to be eligible. These groups include Native American or Alaska Native, Black or African American, Asian or Asian American, Hispanics or Latinx, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, as well as people with disabilities. This is not intended to be an inclusive list of URM groups in the STEM community. All students who identify as URM are encouraged to apply.

In addition, applicants must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; and be an undergraduate in fall 2023 (seniors graduating in  spring or summer 2023 cannot apply). Open to rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

No previous research experience is required. Students will be expected to work full-time for the duration of the program, so students cannot be enrolled in classes or work another job.

Housing will not be provided. Participants will receive a $5,000 stipend, and commuting expenses will be reimbursed (up to $300).

  • Complete the online application form and upload all the required documents (one-page CV/resume, personal statement, unofficial university/college transcripts).
  • The personal statement should include: a description of research experience if any, reasons you are applying for this internship, research interests, and career interests and plans following graduation.

Applications should be submitted no later than January 1, 2023.

Applications will be reviewed after the closing date, and selected applicants will be notified by the end of January 2023.

The program is designed to provide the participants with a unique interdisciplinary research experience, mentoring, professional development, and increased awareness in the pivotal role that basic and translational genetics and genomics research plays in biomedical research and medicine. Students will carry out a research project with their assigned mentor and attend scientific seminars. Students will present their work/research projects to department faculty at the end of the program. If results of their work are published, students will be included in authors list.

  • Functional Genomics and Multiomics
  • Gene Editing and Cellular Engineering
  • Computational and Data Sciences
  • Neuropsychiatric Genomics
  • Cancer Genomics
  • Gene and Cell Therapy
  • Statistical Genetics
  • Genetics of Human Disease
  • Drug Discovery

Every effort will be made to match you with your preferred type of research, although this is not guaranteed. Mentors and their summer interns will decide on a research project upon further discussion.
