Education is one of the core missions of The Friedman Brain Institute. Our scientists and physicians play a crucial role in training medical students and graduate students at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. They also are instrumental in educating community physicians about advances in the field via our world-class CME program.
Students learn about the latest advances in our understanding of brain and spinal cord disorders, current treatments, and the cutting-edge experimental approaches that are driving discoveries in the laboratory and clinic.
We offer doctors further clinical and research training through our residency programs in clinical neuroscience. In addition, the scientists in our postdoctoral training programs have the opportunity to work in some of the best basic science and clinical laboratories in the nation.
Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Research Training
- Neuroscience Graduate Program (Graduate training is supported in part by several NIH-funded T32 Grants.)
- MD-PhD Program (MSTP)
- Postdoctoral Training

Mount Sinai Emerging Scholars Program
The Nash Family Department of Neuroscience at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) is sponsoring a scholarship opportunity for advanced graduate students from underrepresented backgrounds that are looking to pursue postdoctoral work in the field of neuroscience. Up to two selected recipients will be invited to give a talk in-person at ISMMS, network with faculty, and receive a $1000 honorarium (in addition to travel expenses). We especially encourage Black, Latinx, and Native American students to apply.
Requested application materials:
- The applicant’s CV
- A one page personal statement describing the applicant’s research interests and future goals in neuroscience. Preference will be given to individuals with a specific interest in joining labs at Mount Sinai.
- 1 letter of recommendation from the applicant’s direct faculty mentor or a co-mentor that knows the applicant’s research, and the applicant, well.
- A copy of a representative work in which the applicant is first author (published, on bioRxiv, or a PDF version of a submitted manuscript are all acceptable)
Upon which criteria will applicants be judged?
- We are looking for passionate scientists with a track record of rigorous/impactful science. Applicants need not have any papers in CNS journals. However, applicants should have a first author manuscript submitted, if not accepted, in a journal. Co-first authorship is considered first authorship.
- Applicants will also be judged upon their broader contributions to society, and record of mentorship, in addition to their research. Volunteer and extracurricular activities should be highlighted in the applicant’s CV/personal statement.
Applicant requirements:
- Must be in graduate school within the United States (or territory).
- Should be within 1 year of dissertation defense at the time of application.
Applications for 2024 - TBD.

Leon Levy Neuroscience Fellowship program
Fellowship Program Leadership
Eric J. Nestler, MD, PhD, a world leader in basic neuroscience research of neuropsychiatric disorders with a long and highly successful track record of promoting the careers of physician-scientists in both psychiatry and neurology, serves as director of the Leon Levy Neuroscience Fellowship Program.
Joining Dr. Nestler is a large team of senior and junior physician-scientists throughout the Department of Neuroscience and the Icahn Institute and Department of Genetics and Genomic Sciences who serve as close mentors for our Levy Fellows in conjunction with the mentoring committees.
Current Leon Levy Neuroscience Fellows
Kapil Gururangan, MD, Andrew H Smith,MD,PhD and Orna Issler, PhD have been selected as the 2021-2023 Leon Levy Neuroscience Fellows. They were chosen based on their individual outstanding medical education performance, their accomplishments in the lab, and their demonstrated commitment to become academic and translational leaders in neuroscience.
