Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency

Welcome to The Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai – The Mount Sinai Hospital. Our program provides residents with robust clinical training in comprehensive obstetrics, gynecology, and ambulatory women’s health care, as well as broad exposure to the various sub-specialties: Complex Family Planning, Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, Gynecologic Oncology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery. and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.

Our mission is to train residents to become superb clinicians, as well as foster the next generation of leaders in women's health care and reproductive sciences. Our residents and faculty achieve this goal by caring for a broad patient population, utilizing our medical resources and technology, and promoting and participating in ground-breaking research.

To achieve this mission, we strive to:

• Recruit outstanding residents who demonstrate an ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-acuity, active learning environment
• Expose residents to the full breadth of the field of obstetrics and gynecology, training them to become well-rounded comprehensive obstetrician-gynecologists
• Provide professional mentorship to allow for further career development, including research opportunities and preparation for fellowship application
• Foster a supportive environment that allows residents to explore and pursue interests in a wide range of areas, including education, research, advocacy, leadership, quality/safety, etc.

The task force is divided into subcommittees which are working diligently to support our residents, fellows, faculty and patients of color. The subcommittees are involved in Advocacy, Ambulatory Services, Education/Recruitment, Gynecology/Gynecologic Oncology, and Labor and Delivery.

Residents at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai -- The Mount Sinai Hospital, receive a number of professional and personal benefits. We provide our residents with a comprehensive benefits package.

Housing

We make every effort to provide affordable housing for all house staff, including  near The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.  All PGY-1 residents are guaranteed housing. We offer accommodations in a number of modern apartment buildings within walking distance of The Mount Sinai Hospital. Many apartments include 24-hour door attendants, intercom security systems, laundry rooms, and sundecks. Larger apartments are available to residents with families.

Stipends for residents are established annually and are similar to those provided by other medical centers within the region. Each resident gets four weeks of vacation per year and receives an attractive benefits package.

Transportation

The hospital is located near the 6 and Q subway lines, as well as the M1, 2, 3, 4 and M96, 106 bus lines. There is a shuttle between The Mount Sinai Hospital and Elmhurst Hospital Center for residents moving between sites. In addition, both the department and the GME office offers Uber services for transportation between hospital sites and late evening traveling.

PGY-2: $84,916
PGY-3: $88,313
PGY-4: $91,845

Other Benefits

1. Funding for conferences -- Department and GME Office support resident travel expenses to national meetings
2. Educational allowance (aka “Book Fund”) -- GME Office provides funds to cover a portion of educational expenses
3. Food stipend -- funds on ID card for meals

Social Activities

Throughout the academic year, the residents have opportunities to bond and take part in multiple social activities. Each year, two residents are chosen to organize social events. Wellness group activities, end of rotation dinners, and class retreats are some of the activities that the residents take part in. There are also certain activities that occur yearly listed below. 

• Screw the Chiefs: Prior to graduation, fourth year residents work to split all the calls for one day. This provides an opportunity for the junior residents to meet together and plan an activity for the day. 
• Wellness Activites: Each year on a wellness Wednesday morning,  residents take part in wellness activities. In the past, activities have included Yoga or Scavenger Hunts in Central Park and Boxing at Rumble. 
• Intern Retreat: Each summer, the new interns participate in a team-building retreat.

How to Apply

Applicants interested in the residency program for the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science at The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai- The Mount Sinai Hospital should submit an application online via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) from the Association of American Medical Colleges.

2023 Application Process and Timeline

Please note:

• Our program will be participating in Program Signaling.
• All our interviews will be conducted virtually.

We offer eight PGY-1 categorical positions each year

• Applicants will be given 48 hours to accept interview invitations, after which we will extend the offer to another applicant.
• All applications must include:
  • ERAS common application
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Three or four letters of recommendation ( At least one letter must be from an OBGYN Faculty member in addition to the Standardized Letter Of Evaluation)
  • Medical school transcript
  • MPSE
  • Step 1 and Step 2CK scores. Step 2CK scores are preferred when offering an interview, however if this is not possible, they must be submitted in ERAS  before our rank list is submitted to the NRMP
  • Personal statement
• All communication about your application status will be sent via ERAS. Due to the number of applicants, the program is unable to respond to applicant inquiries regarding application status or updates.
• Only information submitted via ERAS will be reviewed by the selection committee.

Verification of Dates Only: For verification of dates only, please email gmeverifications@mssm.edu with the appropriate verification request form. For verifications prior to 2015, please forward a copy of the training diploma.

Competency-Based Verification and Requests Requiring Program Director Signature: For competency-based verification requests or for verification requests that require a program director signature (state licensure forms, etc.), please email obgynmshprogramcoordinator@mssm.edu. For verifications prior to 2015, please forward a copy of the training diploma.

We make every effort to complete verification requests within two weeks, and requests are handled on a first-come, first-served basis.
