In 2014, following the creation of the Mount Sinai Health System, the training programs at Mount Sinai Beth Israel, Mount Sinai Morningside, Mount Sinai West, and New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai came under the sponsorship of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS). These training programs are now working in conjunction with training programs at The Mount Sinai Hospital, NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, NYC Health + Hospitals Queens, and the James J. Peters VA Medical Center to form the largest sponsor of graduate medical education in the United States. We have more than 140 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited residency and fellowship training programs that train more than 2,500 medical professionals.
On July 1, 2019, we welcomed the GME programs of Mount Sinai South Nassau to the Mount Sinai Health System and the Icahn School of Medicine.
With a commitment to inclusion, the Icahn School of Medicine has long been dedicated to reaching a diverse field of candidates to join our residency and fellowship programs. In partnership with the Office for Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) and The Patricia S. Levinson Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs (CMCA), we support ISMMS residency and fellowship training programs in the recruitment of trainees from diverse backgrounds, including those underrepresented in medicine. The GME Diversity Council—co-chaired by I. Michael Leitman, MD, FACS, Dean for Graduate Medical Education, and Gary C. Butts, MD Dean for Diversity Programs, Policy and Community Affairs —supports residency and fellowship training program efforts to recruit and guide qualified applicants from diverse backgrounds.
In my role as Designated Institutional Official, I take seriously the responsibility of ensuring that our training programs are adequately supported and resourced to provide the highest quality post-graduate training possible.
