Research is an integral component of academic gastroenterology and plays a central role in our training program. All fellows are required to participate in scholarly activity and it is expected that they will present the results of their research at a national meeting or publish in a peer-reviewed journal. Each member of our full-time faculty member is engaged in clinical research and the fellows will identify a faculty mentor early in their training that matches their area of clinical interest. The fellow can choose from a broad palette of research opportunities and projects include both investigator initiated hypothesis-driven studies as well as quality improvement initiatives. Unlike most fellowship programs, research activity at MSM/MSW begins in the first year of training; our first-year curriculum provides time in each in each 4-week cycle to establish a research mentor and implement a scholarly project. During the second and third year there is ample time and support to complete their research projects.
