Gastroenterology Fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital

The main Gastroenterology Fellowship is a fully accredited three-year fellowship in gastroenterology. This training program draws upon the resources of two affiliated campuses: The Mount Sinai Hospital and the Bronx VA Medical Center. Fellows receive training based on a core curriculum in clinical gastroenterology and hepatology, including endoscopy and special procedures. There are subspecialty rotations that expose fellows specifically in inflammatory bowel disease, gastrointestinal cancer, motility, and nutrition. The Fellowship also provides an opportunity to focus on a sub-specialty area of interest. A strong emphasis is placed on conducting clinical and/or basic research during fellowship training.

For fellows who have completed their standard 3-year training, the GI Division also offers two, one-year advanced training fellowships: Advanced Endoscopy and the Present/Levison Advanced Fellowship in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Fellows are trained in all areas of gastroenterology and hepatology and provided protected time to focus on subspecialty areas within these fields. Because a great deal of emphasis is placed on performing original research during fellowship, half of the training time is protected for this purpose, with an aim toward developing skills necessary to succeed in academic medicine.

The Mount Sinai Hospital offers four positions in the Match for our fully accredited three-year Fellowship in Gastroenterology. The gastroenterology fellowship program participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Applicants should register with the NRMP in order to participate in the Gastroenterology Match.  Applications for the Gastroenterology Match are accepted through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application System).  We will only review applications that are processed through ERAS. Due to the heavy volume of applications we receive, we are usually able to arrange personal interviews with no more than 5-10 percent of our applicants.  We offer a T32 training program entitled "Training in Investigative Gastroenterology and Hepatology”. Fellows will apply for this program during their 2nd/3rd year of fellowship. 

Visas: The institution only sponsors J-1 and H1-B visas. Candidates on a H1-B visa must have already passed all exam steps (I, II, and III) prior to coming to Mount Sinai. Additionally, the institution will consider O-1 sponsorship but candidates must be processed externally prior to the transfer.

COVID-19 Accommodations: Due to the COVID pandemic, our recruitment efforts this Fall will be conducted remotely. We still plan to hold “Interview Days”, but on those days, all interviews, the program overview/tour, meetings with current fellows, and the opportunity to attend GI Grand Rounds will be done by virtual video-visits.
