Separate from our American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) Cosmetic Fellowship Program, the Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship is awarded to a single individual each year. This candidate works with our Chief of Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Fellowship Director, Jesse Lewin, MD, FACMS, as well as other Mohs surgeons within Icahn Mount Sinai’s leading The Kimberly and Eric J. Waldman Department of Dermatology.

Previous fellows have qualified for the requirements set by the American College of Mohs Surgeons, which stipulates a minimum of 500 Mohs surgery cases and 500 reconstructions as primary surgeon. Through our Program, the chosen fellow will be exposed to more than 1,000 micrographic surgery cases, as well as standard excisions, laser surgery, and other procedures. While training with the most advanced lasers available, they may additionally choose to rotate with other surgical subspecialties such as ENT, plastic surgery, and surgical oncology.

This is a high-volume fellowship with a diverse scope of clinical practices. We expect that our fellow will play an active role in the clinical trials conducted by the surgical division. We also expect them to collaborate closely with our clinical trials division. This will provide opportunities to write research protocols, obtain IRB approval, and conduct high quality trials for publications. Participation in the Department of Dermatology’s journal club, book club, and lectures is expected, as well.

The Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship is extremely competitive. Each year we receive approximately 100 applications for one spot starting July 1^st.

The application deadline is August 1^st of the prior fall. Candidates are usually invited for interviews in October and November.

We use the following criteria in evaluating candidate responses: reasons for attending this Program, past research experience, publications, presentations at national and international meetings, and career goals.

Please note that if you are a foreign medical graduate, all certifications, visas, and entry permits must be current and valid, for the duration of the training program, prior to final approval of any applicant. All licenses, Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduate (ECFMG) certification, Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) visa and professional certifications are the applicant's responsibility. The Department does not operate its own J-1 or H-1 program. If selected, the fellow is required to obtain a license to practice medicine in the State of New York prior to starting their fellowship training.
