History

The history of the Mount Sinai Phillips School of Nursing has been intertwined with the Phillips family for over six generations. In the 1880’s, Moses Phillips, along with 39 other immigrants, met to discuss the need for health care for the quarter of a million immigrants who did not meet the residency requirements imposed by local hospitals. At that time, most of the city’s hospitals would not treat patients who had been in the city for less than a year. These 40 early philanthropists each contributed 25 cents to establish the first Beth Israel Dispensary, which opened on Madison Street in 1890.

Rooted in the Past, Boldly Looking Toward the Future

After more than 120 years, The Mount Sinai Phillips School of Nursing is better positioned than ever to reflect our place within the Mount Sinai Health System. In 2020, we moved into a state-of-the-art facility in East Harlem. Our nursing students have the advantage of living and learning in New York City, with all of its rich diversity of culture and broad range of patient conditions. In the same spirit that the Mount Sinai Phillips School of Nursing was established to meet the needs of all New Yorkers—not just the privileged few—our students are prepared to treat each patient effectively with compassion, dignity, and empathy.
