As part of the Medical Scientist Training Program at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS), we offer each of our students a broad range of opportunities. Our program integrates an outstanding research environment with a well-rounded, nationally acclaimed medical education. The NIH’s Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) has funded us continuously since 1977, and we rank fourth in NIH funding per principal investigator among private medical schools (2018 AAMC ranking).
Letter from the Director
Welcome to the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP)! Our mission is to recruit and train a diverse group of students into an inclusive community, to help them become rigorous, visionary, and resilient physician-scientists and leaders in the biomedical revolution.
Our program has been continuously funded by an MSTP training grant from the National Institutes of Health since 1977. The MSTP at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is situated in the heart of New York City, providing care to patients within eight hospital campuses in many of the most racially and ethnically diverse zip codes in the country. We are staunch advocates of intellectual curiosity, multidisciplinary teamwork, clinical and translational focus, scientific innovation, and the support of trainees through their individual paths. Graduates of our program go on to be leaders in academic medicine, government, and industry and are leading efforts to transform how we provide care to patients.
The training environment is multidisciplinary, as students navigate through a dual-degree curriculum, combining their four years of medical school with graduate courses and a PhD degree between their pre-clinical and clinical training. The PhD degree is earned in one of eight multidisciplinary training programs: Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies in Medicine (AIET), Cancer Biology (CAB), Development, Regeneration, and Stem Cells (DRS), Discovery Disease Mechanisms and Therapeutics (DMT), Genetics and Genomic Sciences (GGS), Immunology (IMM), Microbiology (MIC), and Neuroscience (NEU). We offer tailored advising in career, academics, and wellness and emphasize growth through collaboration in individualized development plans.
