The Center for Ophthalmic Artificial Intelligence and Human Health (COAIHH) serves as one of the first centers in the United States dedicated to leveraging the untold potential of AI, data science, and imaging to achieve breakthroughs in ophthalmic care. The Center will focus on a broad spectrum of research, clinical and diagnostic care, and physician education to help bring AI and its rapidly growing family of technologies and capabilities into the ophthalmic mainstream.
With an emphasis on cutting-edge research, COAIHH will develop population health and value-based vision care models to advance the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai (NYEE) and Mount Sinai mission of reducing vision care service disparities. No less important will be the Center’s role in training the next generation of leaders in eye care and research within the expanding realms of telemedicine, AI-facilitated care, and virtual ophthalmology. To that end, clinical and research fellowships are expected to be offered in the future.
COAIHH’s chief assets will be its established partners, including:
- The Windreich Department of Artificial Intelligence and Human Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, on a mission to make the tools and techniques of AI available to all Mount Sinai researchers and physicians to facilitate emergency responses and long-term strategic decisions.
- The NYEE/Mount Sinai Department of Ophthalmology’s Eye and Vision Research Institute, where the latest advances in nanotechnology and genomics, neuroscience, imaging, and precision medicine are applied to uncover new treatments to preserve and restore eyesight.
- The Shelley and Steven Einhorn Clinical Research Center at NYEE is devoted to developing better diagnostic technologies and clinical trials often done in conjunction with pharmaceutical and other academic partners, all aimed at fostering the best patient care and life-changing breakthroughs.
