Diversity increases the variety and quality of experiences, perspectives, and scholarly interests among faculty and trainees. The longstanding paucity of Black and Latinx faculty at Mount Sinai and nationwide is no longer acceptable because of the missed opportunities to enhance the breadth, depth, and excellence of our research and teaching enterprise. Increasing research faculty diversity at Mount Sinai will provide a critical mass of role models and mentors to foster the recruitment and retention of students, fellows, and other junior investigators from these under-represented groups, planting the seeds for further diversity in future years.
The Mount Sinai Biomedical Laureates Program is part of our institutional response. The goal of the Program is to increase the number of Black and Latinx research faculty at Mount Sinai and to support their growth as investigators and development towards leadership roles at our institution. Each year, for the next five years, we will recruit 4 Black or Latinx research faculty: two each in basic/translational science research and in clinical science/health services research. Further information about the Laureates Program can be found in this video and Request for Applications.
Nominations are now being considered four times each year, with online due dates of January 1, April 1, July 1, or October 1. Laureates will be selected within 6 weeks after each submission date. Nominations must be submitted through this Online Portal.
