Our Residents

Our residents match the diversity of the patients we serve. They come from New York City, the tri-state region, across the United States and all over the world. Our residents embrace the opportunity to learn about different cultures and traditions as much as from each other as from their patients.

Five exceptional and dedicated housestaff are chosen annually to stay on an additional year. They are role models, educators, leaders and housestaff advocates.  In addition to scheduling conferences and speakers at Grand Rounds, they are invaluable resources for teaching, conducting rounds, disseminating medical literature, and overseeing administrative and educational aspects of the program.

The 2023-24 Chief Residents are:

Jeeyune Bahk, MD
Dr. Bahk is originally from Seoul, South Korea and completed most of her education in the United Kingdom. She earned her medical degree from Imperial College London with Distinction in Medical & Clinical Sciences and First-Class Honors. As a resident, she initiated several clinical studies, namely on pulmonary embolism and COVID-19 infection. Passionate about medical education, she pursued the Medical Education Track, the Harvard Macy program, and developed simulation-based curriculums for residents.

As a Chief Resident of the PGY-2 class, she will also serve as a co-counsel for the Research Committee, CPR, Sepsis, and Women in Medicine Committee. After her chief year, she plans to pursue a fellowship in Pulmonary & Critical Care.

Outside work, she stays very active as an avid biker and hiker, an amateur pianist, and loves spending time with friends in New York. She never misses an opportunity to travel.

Joseph Elias, MD
Dr. Elias, originally from Beirut, Lebanon, serves as a Chief Resident in the Department of Internal Medicine at Mount Sinai West and Morningside Hospitals. He obtained his medical education at the American University of Beirut Faculty of Medicine (AUB-FM) and completed his Internal Medicine residency at Mount Sinai West and Morningside. Dr. Elias is interested in cardiovascular diseases and actively participates in various research projects while contributing to Med-Ed initiatives.

In his role as a Chief Resident, Dr. Elias assumes responsibility for overseeing the schedules of third-year residents, organizing Peer Learning Sessions, and participating in the RCA (root cause analysis) and sepsis committees. With a strong interest in cardiovascular disease, he intends to pursue a fellowship in this field following the completion of his chief year.

Outside of his professional endeavors, Dr. Elias indulges in recreational activities such as skiing, hiking, and playing basketball. He also enjoys exploring new restaurants and cuisines.

Ariela Hazan, MD
Half Brooklynite, half Israeli, most of Dr. Hazan's life has been spent in New York City, with some brief stints for study in China and Scotland. She spent a year between college and medical school, working as an English teacher in Taiwan on a Fulbright Scholarship. Additionally, she spent time as a research coordinator, and eventually attended the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Hazan graduated early in order to start working on the COVID-19 floors at Mount Sinai Morningside and quickly transitioned into residency thereafter. During residency she was involved with the medical education track, Leadership Development Program, the Harvard Macy program and multiple committees including the root cause analysis and ethics committees. She plans to apply for palliative care fellowship. In her free time, she enjoys playing table tennis, beach volleyball and spending as much time outside as possible.

Randy Leibowitz, DO
Dr. Leibowitz is the current ambulatory clinic Chief Resident for Mount Sinai Morningside/West. He was born and raised in New York City and grew up in Jericho, NY. He received his bachelor’s degree in molecular and cell biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He obtained his medical degree from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine where he graduated with honors in the biomedical sciences.

Dr. Leibowitz is currently involved in multiple research and quality improvement studies with a focus in Gastroenterology and Hepatology and is currently applying to gastroenterology fellowship. During his residency, he graduated from the Medical Education Track, served as president of the House Staff Council as well as various hospital committees including co-director of the Research Council, Root Cause Analysis, CPR Committee, and Medical Student Education. Outside of medicine, his passions include sports, music and you will likely find him playing shortstop and centerfield in Central Park.

Rohit Nathani, MD

Dr. Nathani, a native of Mumbai, India, completed his medical education at Seth GS Medical College in Mumbai and Internal Medicine residency at Mount Sinai West and Morningside. With a focus on Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Dr. Nathani has actively been engaged in multiple research projects and has been involved in quality improvement initiatives.

As a Chief Resident, he oversees ambulatory resident education, research curriculum, resident wellness and organizes the Internal Medicine Grand Rounds. While the demands of residency are great, it is possible to take advantage of living in one of the greatest, most culturally vibrant cities on the planet. Throughout the year there are numerous planned activities that build camaraderie among the residents and allow you to have a good time. From the talent show to the holiday party to the end-of-the-year party, our residents truly enjoy each other’s company and like to spend time hanging out with each other. In addition, residents participate in a soccer club, happy hours and promotional group activities such as theater, museum and Central Park events.

Housing

The hospital provides housing for residents across the street from Mount Sinai West. The two buildings located at 515 West 59th Street and 10 Amsterdam Avenue have apartments for residents at a subsidized rate, below market-value. Studios, one and two bedroom apartments are available, each with modern amenities like heating/air-conditioning units, laundry machines in the building and 24-hour security.

Transportation

There is a bus service (“the Jitney”) provided between our Morningside and West campuses and most housestaff use that or public transportation to get around. For those residents who choose to live off-campus, and to drive to work, there is subsidized parking at lots conveniently located near the hospitals.

Benefits & Salary

Residents at Mount Sinai Morningside and Mount Sinai West are all part of the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR) union. Representatives are chosen from the department and serve as delegates for the residents. The compensation package includes comprehensive medical, dental and vision benefits, as well as life insurance. In addition, residents receive four weeks of paid vacation, malpractice insurance paid by the hospital, disability insurance and reimbursement for travel to academic conferences.
