Overview
The Department of Pathology is deeply committed to training the next generation of leaders in experimental pathology. Physician-scientists are the foundation of translational research, with experimental and molecular pathology having a disproportionately large impact. Advances in personalized genomic medicine are leading to the acquisition of transformative medical knowledge that will pave the way towards breakthroughs in patient care. This program, which leverages the unique patient populations and scientific activities throughout the health system, is geared towards trainees with a strong research interest who wish to take advantage of the premier training opportunities that the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai can provide.
Program Structure
- Trainees will complete an ACGME-accredited residency with certification in AP, CP, AP/CP, or AP/NP
- Trainees will have up to six months of protected research time during residency (up to 1 year for AP/NP)
- Trainees will receive preference for fellowship positions at Mount Sinai
- Trainees will receive personalized mentoring from pathology and other Mount Sinai research faculty to facilitate engagement with one of the many prestigious Mount Sinai laboratories (see below); laboratory shopping is encouraged during the formal ACGME training period
- Trainees may select any laboratory within the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai
- Trainees will receive mentoring and administrative support for a mentored NIH K award application
- Trainees will apply for postdoctoral fellowship support after becoming ABP certification eligible
- Trainees will have access to ample internal Mount Sinai philanthropic research funding, such as the Friedman Brain Institute Scholars program, the Schein Fellowship in Experimental Pathology, among many others
- Trainees will transition as early as possible to an instructor level position to enable application for independent R level funding

Requirements
Applicants must hold either an MD-PhD or an MD with significant research training. Successful applicants will also have demonstrated productivity in basic science or translational research.
Application process
Applicants are encouraged to inquire with the residency program director. Candidates will be selected among the ERAS match system by the selection committee and ranked through the National Residency Match Program as per the rules of the program.
