The FlexGrad Program at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai provides a pathway to early admission into our graduate school (PhD and MD/PhD programs) for students already enrolled in our Summer Undergraduate Research Program for underrepresented scholars (SURP4US).
Select rising juniors and seniors will be conditionally admitted into the PhD or MD/PhD degree programs through FlexGrad. Early assurance for admission to the Graduate School through our FlexGrad program is coupled with credit for laboratory rotations, allowing students an accelerated pathway to a degree at ISMMS.
To be eligible for FlexGrad PhD, applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Students must be previously accepted and currently enrolled in SURP4US;
- Demonstration of research commitment sufficient to inform career plans that build on their PhD training;
- Rising third year or fourth year of college as a full-time student, working towards a bachelor’s degree at college or university in the US or Canada.
To be eligible for FlexGrad MD/PhD, applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Rising third year or fourth year of college as a full-time student, working towards a bachelor’s degree at a regionally accredited college or university in the US or Canada
- Previously accepted and currently enrolled in SURP4US
- Demonstration of research and clinical commitment sufficient to inform career plans as a physician-scientist
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Meet the technical standards for admission to the MD program
- Meet the minimum subject requirements for admission to the MD program
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 (or equivalent) or higher
- Have taken the SAT or ACT
- Cannot have taken the MCAT
If accepted to the FlexGrad PhD programs, students must meet the following eligibility criteria prior to matriculation:
- Honors thesis or equivalent
- One year of either Chemistry, Biology, or Physics, with no less than a “B.”
- One year Mathematics, with no less than a “B.”
- One semester of a Statistics course*
*No online courses can be used to fulfill the pre-matriculation requirements.
If accepted to the FlexGrad MD/PhD program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria prior to matriculation:
- Honors thesis or equivalent
- Meet the minimum subject requirements for admission to the MD program, with no less than a “B.”
