MD, PhD, Dual Degree Commencement Ceremony

The 2023 Commencement Ceremony will be in person. Our goal is to ensure the health and safety of you and your loved ones as well as to make sure you, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Class of 2023, have a celebratory Commencement Ceremony to share with your friends and family.

The ceremony will be held at David Geffen Hall in Lincoln Center on Thursday, May 11 at 2 pm. The ceremony will also be livestreamed and we will provide you with a viewing link for you to share with your loved ones closer to the ceremony date.

Ceremony Logistics

You have until March 16 to order your cap and gown.

Yes, that’s right—your rental is paid for you by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Anyone who misses the March 16 deadline must pay for their order without the guarantee that Herff Jones can fulfill the rental. All regalia questions should be directed to Steven Clarke at Herff Jones: 516-223-2572 or thegraduateguy@aol.com.

You can pick up your regalia on April 26 from 4-7 pm or April 27 from 11 am-2 pm in Stern Auditorium.

All MD, PhD, and Dual Degree graduates will be given eight* (8) guest tickets.  Tickets will be distributed during the regalia pick-up dates in April.

If you would like to request additional tickets, please fill out the Additional Commencement Ticket Form by Monday, April 17.  Due to capacity limitations, extra tickets are not guaranteed.  We will do our best to accommodate you. We encourage you to work with your classmates for additional tickets prior to filling out the additional ticket request form.  

Please note that all guests, including children 2+, will need a ticket to enter Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall.

As part of our commitment to health and safety, we encourage everyone coming to Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall to wear a mask. It is not required but, recommended.

Any degree candidates who require special accommodations in order to participate in their Commencement Ceremony should contact commencement@mssm.edu. Students with guests requiring early seating or special needs accommodations for Commencement should fill out the Special Seating Request Form by April 17.

Please note: those who enter the Hall for early seating cannot hold seats for others.

You will be allowed to take photos after the ceremony but you MUST return your cap, gown, and hood inside the lobby of David Geffen Hall.

  • After the ceremony ends, you will be able to take pictures with your guests. You must return all academic regalia to the Herff Jones drop-off stations inside David Geffen Hall. You will not be permitted to leave the premises with any regalia.
  • The School will hire a professional photographer to capture your hooding and receiving your diploma on stage.
    • Prints of these professional shots will be available for purchase after the Commencement Ceremony.
    • You will receive further information on how to order prints in late May 2022.

Q: How do I, or my family and friends watch the ceremony virtually?

A: The Commencement ceremony will be livestreamed from David Geffen Hall. A link will be provided to share with your friends and family a few days before Commencement.

Q: How many tickets does each student get? Can you get extra tickets?

A: Each student will get up to eight* (8) tickets. Please note, graduating students will not need tickets to enter David Geffen Hall. If you need additional tickets, please fill out the Additional Commencement Ticket Form and indicate how many extra tickets you need. The deadline to request additional tickets is Monday, April 17

Q: My father/mother is a doctor, so can he/she hood me?

A: The institution has decided to not allow graduates to choose their hooder due to a multitude of reasons but mainly because of equity and infection prevention precautions. Graduates will be hooded by a select group of senior leadership for the MD recipients and PhD students will be hooded by their PI.

Q: How long is the ceremony?

A: The ceremony is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Q: Can I take pictures in David Geffen Hall during the ceremony?

A: Yes, you can take pictures during the ceremony.

Q:  Can I leave tickets for family members at the front desk?

A: Yes, you can leave tickets for your family members in a labeled envelope with the attendants at the Box Office at David Geffen Hall.

Q: Where is David Geffen Hall?

A: David Geffen Hall is located at 10 Lincoln Center Plz (at W 64th Street).

Q: Will there be discounted parking?

A: There is no discounted parking for Commencement.

Q: Is there reserved seating?

A: There is no reserved seating.

Q: Can children attend the ceremony?

A: Children are invited to attend but, children aged 2+ require a ticket.

Q: Will professional pictures be available to purchase?

A: Several weeks after Commencement, pictures will be available for purchase online.

Q: I need disabled/special seating accommodations; whom can I contact?

A: Students with guests requiring early seating or special needs accommodations for Commencement should fill out the Special Seating Request Form by April 17.

Q: Are there any other events happening in addition to the Commencement Ceremony?

A: Yes, the Mount Sinai Achievement Awards Celebration and Dean’s Reception will be held on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at 4 pm. The Dean’s Reception will be for all graduating MD, PhD, and Dual Degree students and their guests at 583 Park.
