The Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) is one of the most prestigious programs in the nation. The Mount Sinai Hospital is ranked 4th in the country for Cardiology, Heart and Vascular Surgery by U.S. News & World Report® for 2023-24. Specialists at Mount Sinai are widely recognized for their excellence in cardiac care and their ability to blend research into clinical practice. Outstanding outcomes and an unwavering commitment to quality, safety, and patient satisfaction greatly benefit a large volume of national and international patients and their families every year.
Our team of experts provide patients integrated and personalized care plans coordinated by world-renowned clinical cardiologists, experts in imaging and advanced diagnostic testing, cardiac anesthesiologists with expertise in perioperative transesophageal echocardiography, and specialized intensive care physicians. This multidisciplinary and comprehensive approach, in conjunction with continual enhancement of surgical technology and facilities, has led to a global reputation for cardiac surgical excellence. In addition, our Department is an international hub for complex heart valve procedures and reoperations due to its surgical rigor and exhaustive risk assessment.
We have the expertise in every major area of cardiac surgery, performing corrective procedures for adults and children alike with acquired and congenital heart abnormalities. Our core treatments include mitral valve surgery, mechanical assist devices, aortic valve and aortic aneurysm surgery, coronary revascularization, heart transplantation, and complex heart valve procedures.
From complex ischemic and degenerative mitral valve operations, where our surgeons can routinely repair (rather than replace) valves, with a repair rate that nears 100 percent, we have a reputation for taking on difficult cases, and we offer a trusted destination for cardiovascular care worldwide. In addition, our specialists travel globally, sharing information as part of academic exchanges, treating young patients with advanced techniques, and fostering partnerships in countries like Thailand, the Dominican Republic, and Vietnam.
In the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, we employ a team-based approach to treatment and patient care. Our doctors all have different areas of expertise, but each specialty complements the rest with synergistic results.
At times, that might also require collaborating with non-surgeons (such as cardiologists and interventional cardiologists) in locations like catheterization labs where heart arteries and chambers can be visualized with diagnostic imaging equipment. Like any true team, we are all working toward the same goal, and for ISMMS physicians that goal is the health and well-being of each of our patients.
Residency and Fellowship Programs
Our parallel, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited, six-year residency program and two-year fellowship program provide valuable knowledge and innovative training in cutting-edge cardiovascular surgical modalities. Some of our current fellows are surgeons from around the world who choose to spend a few years at ISMMS learning about topics like advanced treatment of valve disease before returning home to practice what they learned here.
