The Department of Neurology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai offers a one-year fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology. We have two positions available for the Clinical Neurophysiology fellowship, one with an emphasis on electroencephalography (EEG)/epilepsy and the other focusing on electromyography (EMG) and neuromuscular medicine. Both positions are approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. We are looking for applicants who have successfully completed an adult neurology residency in the United States.
Electroencephalography Track
Our epilepsy program spans the New York City metropolitan area with outpatient practices in multiple locations. We have inpatient epilepsy monitoring units at three locations- The Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai West, and Kravis Children’s Hospital. These inpatient locations are all designated as Level 4 Comprehensive Epilepsy Centers certified by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers.
Our intensive one-year fellowship program focusing on EEG/Epilepsy provides clinical and didactic education about the multidisciplinary care of patients with epilepsy. Trainees will learn how to read routine, ambulatory, and long-term video EEG studies in both ICU and non-ICU settings under faculty supervision by both adult and pediatric epileptologists. You learn about the differential diagnosis of seizures, characterizing and recognizing various epilepsy syndromes, complex interictal and ictal patterns, managing convulsive and non-convulsive status epilepticus, and the medical and surgical treatment of epilepsy.
At Mount Sinai West, we use ROSA™ robotic assistance for placement of intracranial stereo EEG electrodes, a state-of-the-art approach that is minimally invasive and highly accurate, to localize the seizure focus. Fellows will learn how surgical referrals are made for different types of interventions such as stereo EEG, responsive neurostimulation, vagal nerve stimulation, stereotactic laser ablation of the seizure focus (LiTT), staged craniotomy etc. Trainees will participate in performing functional brain mapping and Wada tests under supervision.
In addition to clinical education, we offer didactics on a wide array of topics, which include weekly multidisciplinary epilepsy surgical conferences, journal clubs, EMG and EEG lectures and clinical research meetings etc.. We cover a wide range of topics related to epilepsy, EEG, pre-surgical management of refractory epilepsy cases, nerve conduction studies, electromyography, evoked potentials, sleep studies, intraoperative monitoring (IOM), and neuromuscular diseases. As a fellow, you will see patients in epilepsy clinics, and provide inpatient epilepsy consults for both ICU and non-ICU patients. Fellows will interact with and teach medical students, neurology residents, and allied health professionals. We encourage our fellows to attend and present posters and abstracts at national meetings. We are able to provide tuition and travel grants, within a set dollar amount.
Fellows who complete the fellowship will be eligible to take the Clinical Neurophysiology Exam offered by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in the EEG track.
Meet our Team
At Mount Sinai, we have several adult and pediatric epileptologists in our faculty. These highly experienced and educated professionals are eager to train the next generation of neurologists and epileptologists.

Electromyography Track
Our EMG track emphasizes clinical electromyography and neuromuscular diseases. You will learn the principles and practice of electroencephalography (EEG), nerve conduction studies (NCS), electromyography (EMG), evoked potentials (EPs), intraoperative monitoring (IOM), diseases of the peripheral nervous system, sleep medicine, autonomic physiology, intraoperative monitoring, central motor physiology, and electronystagmography.
At our clinical neurophysiology laboratories, we perform approximately 1,400 EMG examinations per year. The wide range of patients enables you to observe and participate in a broad spectrum of procedures including neuromuscular ultrasound, botulinum toxin injections, motor unit analysis, and single-fiber EMG. We emphasize electrodiagnosis as an adjunct to clinical examination.
As a fellow, you participate in outpatient and inpatient neuromuscular consultations and share responsibility for teaching the neurology residents and medical students who rotate through the laboratories. In addition, we offer an extensive teaching conference schedule, covering electrophysiology and nerve/muscle/skin biopsy review. You interact with and teach medical students, neurology residents, and allied health professionals.
Didactics include weekly lectures on a wide array of topics, weekly multidisciplinary epilepsy surgical conferences, journal clubs, and clinical research meetings. We cover a myriad of topics related to epilepsy, EEG, NCS/EMG, sleep, EPs, IOMs, and neuromuscular diseases. Our department encourages our fellows to attend and present posters and research abstracts at national meetings. We provide tuition and travel grants within set dollar limits.
Once you complete the fellowship, you will be eligible to take the Clinical Neurophysiology Exam in EMG Track.
