The Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) Fellowship at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai provides trainees with a comprehensive educational program which will expose fellows to all aspects of maternal and fetal medicine. Our program is conveniently located on the border of the Upper East Side of Manhattan and East Harlem. This program exposes our fellows to patients from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds and difficult maternal, obstetric, fetal, and neonatal complications. Our fellowship provides comprehensive training in medical management of various maternal conditions including an interdisciplinary approach to caring for patients.
We provide extensive training in the following areas:
- Fetal diagnosis and therapy
- Invasive procedures (CVS, amniocentesis, multifetal pregnancy reduction, etc.)
- Genetics
- Science and clinical research
- Clinical management of complicated pregnant patients
- Ultrasound and fetal echocardiography
Curriculum
Fellows learn how to manage complicated conditions through a combination of formal didactic lectures and interdisciplinary conferences in fetal echo, genetics, neonatology, pediatric cardiology, urology, and surgery. Our formal interdisciplinary meetings are attended by MFM specialists, obstetric anesthesia, nursing, and specialists involved in the case.
While our fellows work closely with residents and attendings, they also have the opportunity to create their own plans in both in-patients and out-patient clinic settings. The fellow-run (MFM attending supervised) ultrasound clinic is one of the most unique opportunities for fellows to learn ultrasound skills and manage a busy ultrasound unit. Through elective and fellow-driven research, our program allows students the opportunity to focus on a variety of areas including genetics, fetal echocardiography, infectious diseases, ultrasound-guided procedures, and biostatistics.
We support fellowship research activities with one-on-one mentoring as well as providing dedicated research coordinators and a team of biostatistician/epidemiologists that assist with study design and analysis. We hold regular research meetings to provide updates and guidance, and often work with a team of residents and students who assist in research projects. We are proud of the significant number of oral and poster presentations at national meetings, including SMFM, AIUM, ACOG, and SRI.
Our fellowship follows all required guidelines and is certified by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). We have a designated research coordinator as well as a Departmental Vice Chair of Research to assist in all ACGME-related activities.
Our graduating fellows have a long history of continuation in academic medicine and continued research, as well as the opportunity to advance their careers in ways that best fit their personal lives. With the education and experience from the MFM fellowship, our fellows are well trained to practice medicine in any circumstance with the ability to make outstanding clinical decisions and perform difficult advanced procedures.
Educational Programs
The educational programs within the MFM fellowship are designed to enhance the career by providing further opportunities for our fellows.
